Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
